About

Ellen Bellerose

Artist and Jazz Singer

I have been an artist since the age of 14. Whether it be through music or art, my expression comes through with spirit and elegance. I have worked as a portrait artist for 40 years for the most part working on a commission basis. I am now enjoying the freedom of producing and marketing images of my desire.

I have been a resident of Hawaii for almost 40 years and I have a profound love and respect for Hawaii and her people. As I began doing research for an artist rendering I was introduced to the history of Princess Ka’iulani and became enamored by her. It was her poignant and tragic story as well as her profound beauty that compelled me to draw her.  After learning about her I began seeking out more and more inspiring subjects. I focused initially on the women of the Hawaiian monarchy; the attempt was to represent the quiet majesty, strength, dignity, and often the sorrow of these phenomenal women.

These works include Princess Ka’iulani, Queen Lili’uokalani, Queen Emma, Princess Ruth, Princess Pauhi, Queen Kapiolani, and Princess Likelike. The collection has expanded to include the men of the Hawaiian monarchy as well which include King David Kalakaua, Prince Koa, and currently drawing King Kamehameha I. Along with each portrait, I include a brief history of their lives focusing on their station in life, contributions they made to society and the challenges they overcame. All of them were deeply affected by the Hawaiian history and worthy of celebration.

A certificate of authenticity is attached to the back of each portrait noting the number in the series of the limited edition.

Over the years I have used different mediums including pencil, pastel, oil, watercolor, and charcoal but I prefer working in graphite, delicately laying  pencil strokes into living expressions. My work can be found at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Native Intelligence on Main Street, Kamehameha Schools on both Oahu and on Maui, and in private collections throughout the country.
